NEW DELHI, DEC. 28. The Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department today cleared the decks for release of raw water to Delhi's new Sonia Vihar water treatment plant from the Upper Ganga Canal in Muradnagar from this Wednesday. On Monday, the Uttar Pradesh Government had issued the requisite order for release of 80 cusecs of water daily for 10 weeks. The water is to be used for flushing and trial run of the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant and its distribution system in Delhi. A team of senior U. P. Irrigation Department officials along with those of U. P. Jal Nigam visited the water release site on Tuesday to oversee the arrangements. Necessary directions were issued to dismantle a strong brick wall connecting the Upper Ganga Canal and the 30-km-long closed conduits which would supply water to Sonia Vihar. Officials of the U. P. Jal Nigam, however, said it would take three to four days for the water released from the Upper Ganga Canal to reach Sonia Vihar. "The water will not reach Delhi before Thursday," a Jal Nigam official said. This, he explained, was because of the release of only 80 cusecs of water against the conduit's capacity of 270 cusecs. "As the water in the conduit would flow on gravity, it would require a substantial quantity of raw water to fill it up. It is only then that the water will flow and reach Sonia Vihar," the official added. The conduit has been constructed by the U. P. Jal Nigam. U. P. Irrigation Department officials, however, clarified that the water to be released to Delhi was a temporary arrangement. It was only for the trial run and flushing of the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant. "This water is not for any other use. The Delhi Jal Board has to discharge the entire water into the Yamuna for use by our farmers. The Government order is valid only for two and a half months," he said.
