By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 28. The district administration today set up 36 relief camps to accommodate the families fleeing the coastal areas in the wake of the panic created by reports of a fresh tidal surge. With this, the total number of camps has gone up to 39. As many as 50,470 persons have been housed in the camps located in the Thiruvananthapuram, Chirayinkeezh and Neyyatinkara taluks. The Additional District Magistrate, V. Prabhakaran Nair, said the relief camps were opened as a precautionary measure. He said no tidal surge had been reported from anywhere along the coast today. The administration has made arrangements to provide free food, drinking water, lighting and sanitation at the camps. Mr. Prabhakaran said the Cabinet decision on free ration for a month would be implemented as soon as the order was issued.
Medical camps held
The Health Department has organised 151 medical camps for the victims of the tsunami disaster in the affected districts, according to the Health Director, B. Mahilamani. While 36 camps were organised in Kollam, 31 were held in Alappuzha, 30 in Ernakulam, three in Thrissur, 25 in Kozhikode, 16 in Kannur and 10 in Thiruvananthapuram. As many as 4,217 persons were examined in Kollam district and 642 persons are being treated as in-patients. Out of 18,000 persons examined in Alappuzha district, 335 were treated. In view of a threat of epidemics breaking out in the affected districts, those living in the relief camps and others have been advised to drink water only after boiling it for 15 minutes. Water should be stored only in clean vessels and only cups with handles should be used to take water from them. Further, food should be kept covered to prevent infestation by flies and only cooked food should be eaten. Fruits and vegetables should be washed with clean water before use.
