This Day That Age
Mr. M. Patanjali Sastri, retired Chief Justice of India, said in Madras on December 29 that "the legal profession need have no fear about its future, if the lawyer convinces the public that he is there to serve the people and places the resources of his training and skill at their disposal." He deprecated frequent amendments to the Constitution of India. Referring to the amendments recently introduced in the Lok Sabha and justified on the ground that judicial decisions had put serious difficulties in the way of social welfare legislation, he said it was an error to think that social welfare "is something incompatible with protection of private property." Mr. Patanjali Sastri was presiding over the ninth Madras State Lawyers' Conference convened under the auspices of the Provincial Bar Federation, Madras. Mr. N.C. Chatterjee, M.P., inaugurated the conference. After examining the various decisions, Mr. Patanjali Sastri observed: "The cases represent an earnest attempt to reconcile the rival demands of State control and regulation of private property and the constitutional protection thereof and lay down a principle which is fair to the Government and just to the citizen." The conference was held in a special pandal in front of the stage of the open-air theatre of the Vivekananda College and was largely attended by lawyers from the city and the mofussil. Those present at the opening session included present and former Judges of the High Court and several District Judges. Mr. K. Kamaraj Nadar, Chief Minister, hoisted the national flag.
