Letters to the Editor
Sir, One of the greatest calamities has struck India. Why is it that the Government did not consider it fit to declare even a day's mourning?
Aashrai Arun,
* * * Sir, When the Central Government declares state mourning for departed former Presidents and Prime Ministers, could it not declare a day's mourning for the people who perished in such large numbers in the killer tsunami?
Srikanth Vijayaraghavan,
* * * Sir, In view of the tragedy that has left thousands dead and homeless, there should be no merry making on December 31. If star hotels and clubs feel a bash is unavoidable, they should contribute a share of their profits towards relief.
M. Somasekhar Prasad,
* * * Sir, We should pledge to welcome 2005 solemnly by praying and expressing our solidarity with those who have lost their loved ones.
Commodore (retd.) Lokesh
Noida, U.P. * * * Sir, In this hour of national tragedy, people should avoid expensive New Year parties.
C.V. Subramaniam,
* * * Sir, Throughout the world, in spite of several tragedies, people continue to celebrate the New Year. It is done with the fond hope that at least the coming year will be a better one. Hotels and clubs can place a charity box and request the guests to drop their contributions in it.
R. Venkataramani,
