MYSORE, DEC. 29. The Mysore Agenda Task Force (MATF) has opposed the introduction of "Pay and Park" system in Mysore city. In a letter to the Mayor, Dakshinamurthy, copies of which were made available to the press, the convenor of MATF, Lakshmana, urged him to convince the members of the Mysore City Corporation against implementing the proposed "Pay and Park" scheme in the city. Copies of the letter were also sent to the city Police Commissioner, Pravin Sood. The reasons cited include the relatively low number of vehicles in Mysore in comparison with the number of vehicles in Bangalore. Mr. Lakshmana pointed out that "Pay and Park" contractors never take the responsibility for vehicular theft or loss. The scheme, which is based on an hourly system, may provide the contractors an opportunity to collect exorbitant amounts. Though the vehicle owners in Mysore do not mind paying either Rs. 2 or Rs. 5 as parking fee, they suffer harassment from these contractors. The corporation should abandon its idea to increase its revenue base by implementing the scheme, he added. The corporation has finalised the "Pay and Park" scheme in consultation with the city police, which is in favour of the scheme in view of the rising number of vehicle thefts that are being reported.
