Ryots up in arms against water diversion

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL, DEC. 29. F armers under the Tungabhadra Low Level Canal and the KC Canal are anguished by the proposed diversion of 4 tmcft to the High Level Canal to provide more water to Anantapur district.

As against its pro rata allocation of 20.339 tmcft, the HLC utilised 20.167 tmcft by December 20 and even after that it drew 2,000 cusecs.

Meanwhile, the LLC supplying water to the Adoni and Yemmiganur constituencies in Kurnool utilised 10.5 tmcft as against its allocated 15.056 tmcft, about 2 tmcft from the LLC quota was diverted to Anantapur district while the remaining was stocked for drinking water needs.

Similarly, the KC Canal utilised 2.6 tmcft out of its quota of 6.274 tmcft while 3.6 tmcft was left.

The irrigation authorities at the State level planned to divert another 2 tmcft from the quota of the KC Canal to Anantapur district. After reserving 2 tmcft for drinking purpose, the KC Canal officials planned to supply water to farmers till January 31 to help the late-sown crops.

The latest proposal might not permit supply through the canal till the end of January. According to reports, a section of officials had justified the diversion on the ground that the KC Canal utilised around 12 tmcft from the Srisailam reservoir through the escape channel.

A total of 22 tmcft was drawn from the Srisailam reservoir this year to support SRMC canals. Also, 51 tmcft was released to the Pennar reservoir.

Crisis looms large

The KC Canal will not get water till the end of January and this will trigger water problems for Kurnool and other areas dependent on the Tungabhadra.

The Chief Engineer, Abdul Basheer, visited the LLC area to study the need for water and was believed to have suggested to the Government that paddy crop on 1900 acres required water till January and other long duration crops like cotton and chilli on 1800 acres needed water for some more time. A total of 5.6 tmcft was needed to support the existing crops.
