KARWAR, DEC. 29. The brief visit of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to Karwar for an on-the-spot study of the damage caused by tsunami in Uttara Kannada district on Tuesday provided an opportunity for the legislators of the district to highlight the grave problems faced in their respective constituencies and the district. Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, MLA, told the Chief Minister that the people of the district, particularly in the coastal region, are in the grip of fear. The Government should initiate steps to build confidence in them. He called for evolving a special plan to build walls to prevent sea erosion. He pointed out that there are six dams built across the Kali in the district. A nuclear power project is also located at Kaiga. In view of this, a scientific survey should be conducted to know the sustaining power of the soil in the district, he said. Mr. Hegde said that since use of electric power in the district is not much as only two major industries are located here, the district should be exempted from power cut and load shedding. He pointed out that highways have been damaged because of the movement of overloaded lorries carrying manganese. Shivanand Naik, Bhatkal MLA, called for carrying out dredging at Bhatkal port immediately.
