Significance of yoga in education highlighted

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, DEC. 29. The Minister of State for Lottery and Small Savings, Basavaraj Horatti, today highlighted the significance of art, yoga and music in primary and secondary education and said that these subjects should be made a part of the curriculum.

In his inaugural address at the fifth Karnataka State Drawing Teachers' Educational Conference at the Veerashaiva Kalyana Mantapa here on Wednesday, Mr. Horatti said that the Government had initiated measures to fill vacant posts of drawing and music teachers in government primary and secondary schools.

Vacancies

Referring to the apprehensions that the vacant posts of subject teachers in the government schools was affecting the quality of education, Mr. Horatti said that a survey was underway in the State to ascertain the exact number of vacancies of subject teachers in higher primary schools. Based on the findings of the survey, the Government would appoint physical education, craft, drawing and music teachers, he added.

Mr. Horatti said that he had held discussions with the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Ramalinga Reddy, on the demands raised by the teaching community, and the Minister had promised to convene a high-level meeting of the department to discuss the issue. He blamed the bureaucracy, which considers education as a non-productive sector, for the problems faced by the education sector and teaching community. He said that there was an urgent need to change the mindset of bureaucrats towards the education sector.

Target

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Horatti said that he was confident of achieving the target of Rs. 2600 crores fixed by the State Government for the small savings sector. He added that in Gulbarga, 75.91 per cent of the target had been achieved.
