NAGERCOIL, DEC. 29. The General Secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Vaiko, has urged the Government to constitute a high-level committee consisting representatives from all political parties, members of non-governmental organisations, officials and local people to monitor relief work at the tsunami-hit coastal villages. Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, he said relief and rescue operations were moving at a snail's pace in the district. The district administration should speed up relief operations for the welfare of the affected people. Steps had already been taken to provide compensation for the loss of their properties and render immediate relief. Mr. Vaiko said he had already spoken to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, in this regard. He said his party will continue to mount pressures on both the Central and State Governments to formulate a long-term strategy for the implementation of welfare as well development activities with a view to uplifting the economic status of fishermen community. Earlier he visited Kanyakumari, Chinna Muttom, Mandaikadu, Colachel, Lekshmipuram and Nagercoil and consoled the relatives of victims.
