Food packets to be sent to affected areas

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, DEC. 29. The two premier food research institutes based in Mysore are rushing ready-to-eat food packets to feed the hungry millions in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, who have lost their home and hearth in the tsunami.

While the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI)'s first consignment will reach Nagapattinam around noon on Thursday, the one from the Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) is expected to reach Chennai on Thursday.

V. Prakash, director of the institute, told presspersons here on Wednesday that about two tonnes of food items would be sent daily for one week. Racing against time, the laboratory is preparing ready-to-eat food packets as well as cook-and-serve ready mixes. "The menu includes packed rice and sambar, instant bisi bele bath, instant pongal and upma mix. Ready-to-eat `imli poha,' nutrition biscuits and energy food, especially meant for children and upma mix suitable for large-scale cooking is being sent," Dr. Prakash said.

Meanwhile, G.A. Bawa, laboratory director, told The Hindu that estimated 10 tonnes of ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook food items have been prepared by the laboratory. "The first truck containing about 1.5 tonnes of ready-to-eat upma and halwa will reach Chennai tomorrow. The distribution will be carried out by the DRDO staff," he said.

Dr. Prakash said the CFTRI began preparations only on Tuesday when the raw material arrived. "CFTRI is not merely a kitchen. It is a scientific laboratory. Hence, the preparation began only after the mandatory tests were completed," he said. The instructions for use of food items, meant for distribution in Tamil Nadu, have been printed in Tamil.
