Poor kids inaugurate joint

NEW DELHI DEC. 29. Children of the non-government organisation Palna today inaugurated a new McDonald's family restaurant in East Delhi. On the occasion, the children were also gifted blankets.

As a special gesture, McDonald's has arranged a free `Eye Check Up' camp at the Delhi Council for Child Welfare office on January 5 for underprivileged children. This is being organised in association with Dr. Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital.

House tax rebate

NEW DELHI DEC. 29. The property owners of the Capital, who have not cleared their arrears before the implementation of the Unit Area System, would get a rebate of 20 per cent if they pay all their dues before March 31.

The Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi approved a proposal in this regard at its meeting held here today.

The Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, said about Rs. 4,600 crores of house tax was locked up in arrear demands. "We want to collect the entire arrears before March 3," he said.

Appointment welcomed

NEW DELHI DEC. 29. The Employees' Provident Fund Staff Union has welcomed the appointment of S.R.Joshi as the new Regional Provident Fund Commissioner of Delhi region.

In a release issued here today, the union has also thanked the Union Labour Minister for the new appointment.

New chief takes charge

NEW DELHI DEC. 29. The Director-General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, R. A. Mashelkar, took over as President of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) at a function organised on Tuesday.

The function was part of the council meeting of INSA, which is the premier body of scientists of eminence, established in 1935 to promote science in India and harness the scientific knowledge for the cause of humanity and national welfare.

For his outstanding work over the years, Dr. Mashelkar has won numerous fellowships. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society, London, and Foreign Fellow of the United States National Academy of Engineering. Sixteen universities have conferred on him honorary doctorates.

Modern diagnostic centre

NEW DELHI DEC. 29. Moolchand Hospital here will launch its state-of-the-art Imaging and Diagnostic Centre at its premises in the first week of January. The Delhi Health Minister, Yoganand Shastri, will be the chief guest on the occasion.

The Imaging and Diagnostic Centre, which has been prepared by the Moolchand Hospital as a part of its programme to emerge as a community hospital with a national reputation and international reach, is unique in its dual focus on technology and patient-friendly care.

Haj flights

NEW DELHI DEC. 29. The first Haj chartered flight carrying pilgrims from Delhi will take off from the Haj Terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport here this Thursday.

According to a Delhi State Haj Committee release, the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, and the Minister for Transport and Power, Haroon Yusuf, will be present on the occasion.
