KOTTAYAM, DEC. 29. The Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS) president, Thampan Thomas, has came down heavily on the gross mismanagement of the various scientific and technical institutions as is evident from its failure to alert the people on the natural calamity in spite of the great strides the country had made in the area. Speaking to mediapersons today, Mr. Thomas said that what the nation was facing was an avoidable tragedy. The calamity had also once again brought to the fore the wisdom behind the fight against mineral sand-mining in ecologically fragile areas like the Alappuzha-Kollam coast, he said. The HMS and its affiliated trade unions had asked the members to contribute one day's earnings to the relief operations of the tsunami-affected people, he said. A similar contribution from the employers would help to mobilise a sizeable amount for the relief work. The HMS also networked with its international alliance partners like international Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), International Transport Federation (ITF), International metal federation (IMF) and ILO for mobilising funds, he said. The HMS postponed its national executive committee meeting scheduled for January 8 and 9 in Kanyakumari and also the youth wing conference scheduled for January 7 at Thiruvananthapuram, he said.
