Two students do country proud
This recognition earned him a month-long internship in the Arabian Radio Network. Rupali, a student of the first year postgraduate batch, has done the institute proud by winning the Commonwealth Vision Award for her film, `Education for all-All for education.' Upalokayukta sworn in
Bangalore Dec. 29. G. Patri Basavanagouda, retired judge of the Karnataka High Court, was on Wednesday sworn in as Upalokayukta by the Governor, Triloki Nath Chaturvedi, at a function at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Krishna, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa were among those present. Born in July 1938, Mr. Basavanagouda was a judicial officer before his elevation to the Karnataka High Court Bench. The office of Upalokayukta was vacant for over two years after the retirement of G.P. Shivaprakash, retired judge of the Karnataka High Court. Speaking to a television channel, Mr. Basavanagouda said that he will deal ruthlessly with corrupt officials. However, he was aware that many government employees were persons of integrity.
Official to look into stadium issue
BANGALORE DEC. 29. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has directed the official concerned to look into the alleged misuse of M. Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium premises by the Karnataka State Cricket Association. In a letter to the Chief Minister, the president of the Five Year Law Course Advocates' Association, S. Umesh, had alleged that the association had converted the prime defence land into a bar. The association had made a similar complaint to the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi.
Committee to receive representations
BANGALORE DEC. 29. The fact-finding committee of Samarasya Vedike, a voluntary organisation looking into the Udupi Kanaka Gopura controversy will receive representations from individuals and institutions between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on January 1, 2005 at Mythic Society on Nrupatunga Road (opposite Reserve Bank of India) in Bangalore. The committee, headed by the former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, M. Ramakrishna, consists of the former chairman of the Backward Class (Second) Commission, T. Venkataswamy; the former district judge, J. Chandrashekharaiah; the scholar, M. Chidananda Murthy; the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, R. Dwarakinath; the Mangalore-based teacher, Mohan; and the Mysore-based social worker, Venkataramu. The committee has already received 70 representations during its visit to Udupi for a spot inspection.
Man killed in accident
The police identified the dead as Sharanayyaswamy and the injured as Mainuddin and Rasoolsab. They were admitted to the Lingsugur Civil Hospital and later shifted to the Raichur Civil Hospital. Sharanayyaswamy died on his way to the Raichur hospital. The Mudgal Police have registered a case.
Award for student
A press release issued here on Wednesday said that Deeksha had earlier received the "Balapratibha Award" at the Kala Pratibhotsava conducted by the State Government. The Balakala Gandharva Ratna Award will be presented to her at the All Karnataka Children Music and Dance Summit to be held at Gadag on January 8 and 9, the release added.

`Dacoity bid foiled'
The names of the arrested have been given as Gurunathgowda Ningangowdar, Chandrasekhar Basalingappa Uppin, Basappa Mallappa Shiraguppi and Shivanand Basetteppa Gujjannavar, all from Morab village of Navalgund taluk. The police recovered from them five swords, one country-made pistol and 12 live cartridges.

The Superintendent of Police, Soumendu Mukherjee, said that since the tanker belonged to Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, the authorities could reach the spot only by noon. Since then they were making efforts to plug the leakage.
Winners
The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences bagged the prize for the best memorials (written submission) and Jayant Srinivasan of the National Law School University of India, Bangalore, and Veena Gopalakrishnan of the ILS College, Pune, were adjudged best advocate and lady advocate respectively.
