Two students do country proud

Manipal Dec. 29. Two students of the Manipal Institute of Communications here have brought laurels to the country by winning the Dubai Media City's IBDA Media Student Award 2004 and the 2004 Commonwealth Vision Award. According to a press release from the institute here on Wednesday, Abraham Abhishek, a final year student of BA (Journalism and Communication), received the IBDA Award for his entry, a radio drama based on Gulzar's short story, `Khauf.'

This recognition earned him a month-long internship in the Arabian Radio Network. This is the second time that the institute has won an award at the IBDA, following Preeti Srinivasan winning the honour in 2001, the release said. Rupali, a student of the first year postgraduate batch, has done the institute proud by winning the Commonwealth Vision Award for her film, `Education for all-All for education.' Earlier, Ms. Rupali had won the UGC CEC award for best amateur video documentary on Mangalore tiles. — UNI

Upalokayukta sworn in

Bangalore Dec. 29. G. Patri Basavanagouda, retired judge of the Karnataka High Court, was on Wednesday sworn in as Upalokayukta by the Governor, Triloki Nath Chaturvedi, at a function at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Krishna, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa were among those present. Born in July 1938, Mr. Basavanagouda was a judicial officer before his elevation to the Karnataka High Court Bench.

The office of Upalokayukta was vacant for over two years after the retirement of G.P. Shivaprakash, retired judge of the Karnataka High Court. Speaking to a television channel, Mr. Basavanagouda said that he will deal ruthlessly with corrupt officials. However, he was aware that many government employees were persons of integrity.

Official to look into stadium issue

BANGALORE DEC. 29. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has directed the official concerned to look into the alleged misuse of M. Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium premises by the Karnataka State Cricket Association. In a letter to the Chief Minister, the president of the Five Year Law Course Advocates' Association, S. Umesh, had alleged that the association had converted the prime defence land into a bar. The association had made a similar complaint to the Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi.

Committee to receive representations

BANGALORE DEC. 29. The fact-finding committee of Samarasya Vedike, a voluntary organisation looking into the Udupi Kanaka Gopura controversy will receive representations from individuals and institutions between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on January 1, 2005 at Mythic Society on Nrupatunga Road (opposite Reserve Bank of India) in Bangalore. The committee, headed by the former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, M. Ramakrishna, consists of the former chairman of the Backward Class (Second) Commission, T. Venkataswamy; the former district judge, J. Chandrashekharaiah; the scholar, M. Chidananda Murthy; the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, R. Dwarakinath; the Mangalore-based teacher, Mohan; and the Mysore-based social worker, Venkataramu. The committee has already received 70 representations during its visit to Udupi for a spot inspection.

Man killed in accident

RAICHUR DEC. 29. One person died and two sustained serious injuries when a crane hit them when they were working at a quarry near Santekellur village in Lingsugur taluk on Monday.

The police identified the dead as Sharanayyaswamy and the injured as Mainuddin and Rasoolsab. They were admitted to the Lingsugur Civil Hospital and later shifted to the Raichur Civil Hospital. Sharanayyaswamy died on his way to the Raichur hospital.

The Mudgal Police have registered a case.

Award for student

Udupi Dec. 29. Deeksha Ramakrishna, a student of fifth Standard of the Madhava Kripa School, Manipal, has been awarded "Balakala Gandharva Ratna" Award by the Kalavikasa Parishath of Gadag.

A press release issued here on Wednesday said that Deeksha had earlier received the "Balapratibha Award" at the Kala Pratibhotsava conducted by the State Government. The Balakala Gandharva Ratna Award will be presented to her at the All Karnataka Children Music and Dance Summit to be held at Gadag on January 8 and 9, the release added.

Talk on information law

KARWAR DEC. 29. Information Technology laws in India are not effective in dealing with cyber crimes, according to Devadatt Kamat, Advocate, Supreme Court. Delivering a talk on "Information laws in India' here on Tuesday, he said the cyber crimes had global ramifications. Today the world is moving fast towards information technology regime from industrial domain. Information is considered power and the time was ripe to treat information as property so as to bring it in the ambit of law, he said.

`Dacoity bid foiled'

DHARWAD Dec. 29. Police arrested four persons today, who were waiting at Belavatagi cross near the bridge across Bennehalla in Navalgund taluk of Dharwad district, allegedly with the intention of committing dacoity, and recovered lethal weapons from them. Two other members of the gang managed to escape.

The names of the arrested have been given as Gurunathgowda Ningangowdar, Chandrasekhar Basalingappa Uppin, Basappa Mallappa Shiraguppi and Shivanand Basetteppa Gujjannavar, all from Morab village of Navalgund taluk. The police recovered from them five swords, one country-made pistol and 12 live cartridges.

Traffic hit

MANGALORE DEC. 29. Traffic on the National Highway 48. between Sakaleshpur and Uppinangady was hit after a bullet tanker transporting liquefied petroleum gas overturned near Nelyadi on Wednesday. Gas began to leak from the tanker after the safety valve got opened in the accident.

The Superintendent of Police, Soumendu Mukherjee, said that since the tanker belonged to Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, the authorities could reach the spot only by noon.

Since then they were making efforts to plug the leakage.

Winners

DHARWAD Dec. 29. West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata, and the Government Law College, Mumbai, were adjudged winner and runner-up in the National Moot Court Competition conducted under the auspices of the University College of Law of the Karnatak University, which concluded here on Tuesday.

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences bagged the prize for the best memorials (written submission) and Jayant Srinivasan of the National Law School University of India, Bangalore, and Veena Gopalakrishnan of the ILS College, Pune, were adjudged best advocate and lady advocate respectively.
