MADIKERI, DEC. 29. A coffee planter and his wife from Herur, near Sunticoppa, who were holidaying at Trincomalee in Colombo, Sri Lanka, were washed away by the tsunami tidal waves, according to reports reaching here on Wednesday. They were identified as Alagappa Chettiyar and Muthuvalli. Alagappa Chettiyar's brother, Nagappa Chettiyar, who is the chairman of the Karnataka Planters' Association, confirmed the news to this correspondent. He said the bodies were cremated at Chettinad in Tamil Nadu, from where they hailed. The couple were staying in a beach resort when the giant waves engulfed the resort. It is also learnt that a retired Army officer and his wife who are running a holiday resort in Chennai could save themselves from the disaster as they were staying at a home stay facility at Napoklu in Madikeri taluk when the tragedy struck. The couple have been identified as Roy and his wife. In another incident, the entire family of Sebastian, a trader from Madikeri, except one person, could escape, but their Maruti van was washed away by the waves. Sebastian and his family were on a pilgrimage to Velankanni.
