Padayatras to raise funds for relief work

UDUPI, DEC. 29. The Union Minister of State for Programme Implementation and Statistics, Oscar Fernandes, on Wednesday said that a `padayatra' will be taken out here on Friday to raise funds for relief works in States affected by the tsunami tidal waves.

Chairing a special meeting at the Deputy Commissioner's office here, Mr. Fernandes said that the padayatra will begin from the Sri Krishna Temple with Vishwapriya Tirtha Swamiji of Admar Mutt making the first contribution.

An account has been opened by the district administration at the Catholic Centre branch of Syndicate Bank here. People can make contributions to that account (no. 20199682).

The district administration and the Uttara Kannada Zilla Panchayat have jointly organised a padayatra in Karwar on Thursday to collect funds for helping the people affected by the tsunami tidal waves. The Deputy Commissioner has appealed to the public to donate liberally.

The initiative taken by the district administration and other organisations to collect donations from the general public to provide relief to the victims of the tsunami tidal waves in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh today drew very good response from the people. Four teams headed by the Deputy Commissioner, Anjum Parvez, and other senior officials fanned out in different parts of the city to collect the donations from the general public. A decision has been taken to send a medical team to join the relief works in the affected areas. The district administration has opened an account at Krishna Grameena Bank to facilitate philanthropists to directly deposit money in the form of cheques and demand drafts. The president of the Sharanabasaveshwar Vidya Vardhaka Sangha and Peethadipathi of Sharanabasaweshwar Samastan, Sharanabasavappa Appa, has announced a donation of Rs. 2 lakhs to the victims of the tsunami waves in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
