MANGALORE, DEC. 29. The golden jubilee year celebrations of the Mangalore Cashew Manufacturers' Association (MCMA) will be inaugurated here on Thursday. The Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Oscar Fernandes, and the Minister of State for Labour, Tanveer Sait, will attend the programme. The MCMA, formed in 1955 by an Englishman, J.N.A. Hopps, had five processors and three traders. It now has a membership of over 130 manufacturing units in the State. The Association president, Prakash Rao Kalbavi, told The Hindu that the members are now spread out in Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Kolar, Belgaum and Dakshina Kannada districts.
Rename
He said when the MCMA was celebrating its golden jubilee, the members thought it fit to rename it the Karnataka Cashew Manufacturers' Association (KCMA). Giridhar Prabhu, former president of the MCMA, said that India is the world's largest producer of cashew. It exports 120,000 tonnes of cashew a year and is second biggest consumer of cashew kernel with 90,000 tonnes a year against that of 115,000 tonnes in the U.S.
Record
According to the former vice-president of the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India, Walter D'Souza, the cashew industry is all set break its record in terms of imports exports and also processing capacity in 2004-2005. There has been a growth of 150 per cent in exports and over 200 per cent in imports. Karnataka's share in the national cashew trade has increased from five per cent to 10 per cent.
