Varsity to confer five honorary doctorates

GULBARGA, DEC. 29. Gulbarga University will confer honorary doctorates to the Supreme Court Judge Shivaraj Patil, noted physician and teacher of medicine P.S. Shankar, freedom fighter and educationist V.P. Deulgoankar, writer Shantharasa, and Hindustani vocalist Manikrao Raichurkar recognising their valuable service to society as part of silver jubilee celebrations of the university at the 23rd Annual Convocation of the varsity on Thursday.

Shivaraj Patil was born in Deodurga taluk in Raichur district and completed his LLB from SSL Law College in Gulbarga in 1962. He practised at the Gulbarga Bar and was the principal of the SSL Law College from 1975 to 1978. He was appointed judge in the Karnataka High Court in 1990 and was transferred to the Madras High Court in 1994. In 1999 he was appointed Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2003.

V.P. Deulgoankar was born on June 19, 1917. He had his primary education in Gulbarga, higher education in Hyderabad and graduation at the University of Madras. He did his postgraduation in Marathi from Nagpur University and LLB at Osmania University. After teaching for four years at Nutan Vidyalaya High School here, Mr. Deulgoankar joined the freedom struggle against the then Nizam of Hyderabad. He took up teaching again in 1950 after the liberation of the Hyderabad Karnataka region and served in different capacities in government colleges, Osmania University and Karnataka University.

P.S. Shankar, who was born on January 1, 1936, is the winner of many awards including the Dr. B.C. Roy Award, Rajyotsava Award, the Commonwealth fellowship, and the Soviet Land Nehru Award. He is a fellow of the Academy of Medical Science and a member of the National Board of Examinations. Dr. Shankar is serving as Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Medical Director of the Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College.

Shantarasa, who was born on April 7, 1924 in Hemberalu village in Raichur district, has penned more than 35 books. He is proficient in Urdu, Kannada, Hindi, and English, and is a writer, poet, novelist, editor, compiler, researcher, translator, and journalist. Mr. Shantarasa was the president of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy from 1995 to 1998 and was honoured by the State Government for his work "Satya Snehi" in 1962. He also received the Sahitya Academy Award in 1985.

Manikrao Raichurkar was born on December 22, 1921 in Raichur district. Mr. Raichurkar gave his first performance when he was 19 years old. He was also part of the freedom movement against the Nizam of Hyderabad. Mr. Raichurkar was awarded the Rajyotsava Award in 1989 and the Karnataka Sangeet Nrutya Academy award in 1982.
