PONDICHERRY, DEC. 29. There has been very good response to the call given on December 27 by the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, for liberal contributions to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for providing relief to the tsunami-hit people in coastal villages in Pondicherry and Karaikal. An official release said today that so far Rs 16,72,004 had been received from various sections of the community. There have been collections of used garments by government staff of various departments. The Pondicherry State committee of Bharatiya Janata party had also requisitioned the ready-made garments and other clothes from a Tirupur based handloom export project. The president of the Committee R Kesavalu told newsmen today that the garments would be distributed by former Central Minister and the party observer for Pondicherry, S. Tirunavukarasar, MP, to the victims. The Inspector General of Police, P.R. Meena said in a release today that all the staff and personnel of all ranks of the police department here and the members of the Home Guards would donate their one-day salary and allowances to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to enable rehabilitation of the villagers.
PASIC contribution
An official source in the Pondicherry Agro Services and Industrial Corporation (PASIC) chairman and MLA, R. Kamalakannan, would contribute on behalf of the corporation Rs 1 lakh to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund in the next couple of days. There has been an unending response from political parties, legislators, and members of various organisations, service units and also individuals to contribute to the Fund.
