PONDICHERRY, DEC. 29. The Pondicherry Congress president, V. Narayanasamy, has stressed the need for providing safe dwelling units for people in the coastal belt in the Union Territory. At a press conference here today, he said the havoc caused by Sunday's tsunami was so extensive that it would take several months for the fishermen to return to normal life. He said he had requested the Maharashtra Chief Minister to come out with plans to adopt at least 14 of the 28 affected villages in Pondicherry and Karaikal. He had also requested the Maharashtra Congress to help in the rehabilitation work. Mr. Narayanasamy said he had announced the release of Rs. One crore from his MPs Area Development Fund for relief works. Mr. Narayanasamy said the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, his Cabinet colleagues and Congress functionaries had briefed the party president, Sonia Gandhi, about the devastation caused in the region during her visit to Nagapattinam on Tuesday.
