Advani for long-term protective measures

By Our Staff Reporter

NELLORE, DEC. 29. The president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), L.K. Advani, has called for long-term protective measures to be provided for those frequently affected by natural calamities. The tidal wave disaster should be declared a national calamity and relief extended accordingly, he said.

Addressing a series of public meetings in Indukurpet mandal of Nellore district on Wednesday, where people were affected the most by the tsunami, Mr. Advani pleaded with the Central and State Governments to provide a comprehensive coastline insurance scheme. He refused to go into the question whether there had been any laxity on the part of administrations/Governments in providing succour. He wanted the issue to be treated `above politics.' The BJP leader urged the Government to write off loans of fishermen and provide them with fresh loans.

Action plan soon

Mr. Advani said a number of requests had been coming from Chief Ministers of six States ruled by the BJP about the mode of help and all of them would meet next month to chalk out an action plan.

Earlier at his meetings at Gangapatnam Kottapalem, Krishnapuram and Mypadu, people narrated their woes and wanted immediate help at least for a month. They wanted the lost nets and boats replaced apart from housing and other relief measures. Mr. Advani complimented the Swarna Bharati Trust of Nellore for donating Rs. 1 lakh for helping survivors.

The former BJP president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, explained the existing situation to Mr. Advani and announced donation of his three-month salary to the cause of victims. It was announced all party MPs and MLAs would donate one month's salary. The party leaders -- B. Dattatreya, N. Indrasena Reddy and K. Laxman accompanied Mr. Advani.
