Fishermen restless to resume voyage

By Shakeel M. Rasheed

RAJAHMUNDRY, DEC. 29. With nearly all missing fishermen accounted for and the sea gradually taking to its normal state, life appeared to be returning to normal in the coastal areas of East Godavari district on Wednesday.

The Fisheries Department pruned the list of missing persons to three following reports of three fishermen returning at Tallarevu. With catamarans having been pulled well back to the shore and mechanised vessels anchored at jetties, the coast wore a barren look. Fishermen were seen mending their nets or attending to boat repairs, anxious to resume voyages. Small-time fishermen live by the day, the catches netted during their dawn-to-dusk voyages being their only source of living. Tsunami or cyclones, the fishermen have to take the risks in their stride, sooner or later go back to the sea, putting the nightmare of tidal waves behind them. Said a fisherman at Uppada, "We cannot afford to miss even a day's fishing, our family would go hungry otherwise."

Caution is watchword

The District Collector, K. S. Jawahar Reddy, told The Hindu that except for fishermen being asked to stay off fishing, life in the coastal villages was fast returning to normal. He said the administration would wait for the go-ahead from established scientific organisations and the Government before allowing them into the sea again.

In the meantime, the district administration is arranging for distribution of 25 kg rice to the fishermen towards immediate relief. "We have completed distribution of rice to fishermen affected by tidal waves in 14 villages. Rice would be handed over to the other 30,000 fishermen families in 99 villages by tomorrow evening," the Collector said.

Dr. Reddy said the Government was working out a compensation package for fishermen who had lost their boats and nets. "We are also enlisting the help of NGOs in the rehabilitation effort," he added.
