Andhra Bank donates Rs. 2 cr.

HYDERABAD: Andhra Bank on Wednesday announced a donation of Rs. 2 crores to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund in view of the magnitude of the tragedy in the coastal areas of the country. T.S. Narayanasami, Chairman of the bank, made this announcement, according to a press release.

MRPS initiative

HYDERABAD: The Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) will launch a day-long drive to mobilise donations in the form of cash and kind throughout the State between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on December 31, according to its founder president, Manda Krishna Madiga.

At a press conference, Mr. Krishna Madiga said that the money and material thus collected would be handed over to officials concerned at the mandal and district levels.

Stamp papers burnt

Kakinada: District treasury authorities burnt Rs. 40, 46,23,750 worth of non-judicial stamp papers of various denominations in the presence of the District Revenue Officer, the Deputy Superintendent of Police and the District Registrar on Wednesday. A. Siva Prasad, Deputy Director, district treasury office, said that the papers were scrutinised, cut to pieces and burnt in pursuance of Government orders.

In Cuddapah, stamp papers worth of Rs. 3.90 crores were burnt on the Collectorate premises.

The Treasury Officer, S. Md. Mohiuddin Basha, the Joint Sub-Registrar, V.S.R. Prasad, the MRO, Venkateswarlu, and the Cuddapah West CI, Narayanaswamy Reddy, oversaw the operation.

Union leader's immolation bid

Kakinada: The situation in the port area turned tense on Wednesday, with the president of the Port Cargo Boats and Steel Barge Workers' Union, Vanamadi Veerababu, trying to immolate himself, in protest against the alleged denial of their share of work in iron ore shipment at the deep-water port. The police intervened and took him into custody.

The problem began when shipping agents, contrary to earlier practice, allegedly gave passes to rival union workers for loading iron ore cargo. The aggrieved workers went to the Cocanada Chamber of Commerce office and staged a dharna. Since the response from shipping agents was not positive, Mr. Veerababu doused himself in kerosene in a bid to immolate self.

IAS officer gets relief

HYDERABAD: Justice B.K. Somasekhara, who is inquiring into the Yeleru land scam, on Wednesday accepted the unconditional apology tendered by Vijaya Kumar, Director, Municipal Administration, for not appearing on December 22 even after serving of summons.

The Judge decided to drop issuance of show-cause notice to the IAS officer. Mr. Vijaya Kumar told the commission that he repented and that his absence was not intentional or deliberate; it was bona fide. He assured to fully cooperate during the proceedings.

Train halt at Pedavadlapadu

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad-Tirupati-Hyderabad Krishna Express (No.7406/05) will stop at Pedavadlapadu on the Vijayawada-Gudur section for a minute from January 1.

According to a press release, the Tirupati-bound train (No.7406) will arrive/depart at Pedavadlapadu at 1.34/1.35 p.m. In the return direction, the train no. 7405 will arrive/depart at the station at 12.02/12.03 p.m.

Elected to dental association

HYDERABAD: The Deputy Dental Surgeon at Gandhi Medical College, O. Nageswara Rao, was elected president of the Indian Dental Association, Andhra Pradesh branch, during the annual general body meeting held on December 26 in Vijayawada.

New poll panel chief

HYDERABAD: A.V.S. Reddy, a retired IAS officer and former Director-General of the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), assumed charge as the State Election Commissioner here on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters later, Mr. Reddy said he was committed to conducting elections to municipalities and panchayat bodies as per schedule in March 2005 provided the Government completed the delimitation of wards and divisions and notified reservations for SCs, STs and BCs based on 2001 population census.

He expressed himself in favour of the three-tier system of Panchayat Raj as against the five-tier structure of local bodies existing now on the ground that the latter lacked a "link organ."

Mr. Reddy was known for his effective handling of relief and rehabilitation of victims of the tidal wave in Diviseema as Collector of Krishna in November 1977. Subsequently, he was suspended for openly taking up the cause of NGOs.

District Judge selections

HYDERABAD: The written examination for the posts of Grade II District Judge by direct recruitment will be held on January 30 from 10 a m. to 1 p.m. at Hyderabad, Tirupati, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, according to a High Court press release. Eligible advocates may contact the district courts where they are practising after January 5 for obtaining hall-tickets. Those practising in Hyderabad may contact the Chief Judge, City Civil Court.

Weaver ends life

ANANTAPUR: A handloom weaver, Sake Lingamaiah (25), of Muktapuram village in Mudigubba mandal allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his house on Wednesday, due to heavy losses he had suffered.

According to the information reaching here, he had set up three looms at Dharmavaram a couple of years ago and ran into loss. He had also borrowed huge amounts to overcome the losses. Unable to repay the loans he returned to his native place and set up a loom there. But, he suffered losses there too. As the pressure from the lenders was increasing to repay their money he resorted to the extreme step, when his mother and sisters were out on farm work.

Two pseudo naxals arrested

ADILABAD: The Mancherial police on Wednesday arrested two pseudo naxalites - Bathula Santosh Kumar and Namala Ramesh - while they were moving under suspicious circumstances. Two other members of the gang - Uppula Srinivas Reddy and Narasaiah - were absconding.

Donations for tsunami victims

KURNOOL: The Medical Representatives Association collected donations for the tsunami victims here on Tuesday and Wednesday. Venkat of the association said medicines worth Rs 75,000 were collected and seven bags of clothes were also collected. The materials would be delivered to victims at Nagapatnam in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.

The students of KVR Junior College, under the leadership of its principal, Krishna Reddy, collected Rs 27,141 for the victims, according to a press note.

Arrested

CUDDAPAH: An alleged red sanders smuggler, Narasaiah, was arrested under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act on Wednesday on orders issued by the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan.

He would be handed over in the Cherlapalli jail at Hyderabad, according to the Kodur Circle Inspector, Nagaraja. The PD Act was invoked against Narasaiah on establishing that he was involved in smuggling red sanders to Chennai, he said.

Interactive meeting

MADANAPALLE: The Divisional Electrical Engineer (Operation), Madanapalle, in a press note has said that an interactive meeting will be held with agricultural consumers and federation members of the Madanapalle division at 11 am here on December 31. He requested all to attend the meeting.

Garbage clearance

CUDDAPAH: The Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, participated in garbage clearance in Police Lines here on Wednesday.

Stressing the need for clean surroundings, the SP urged youth to take part in upkeep of sanitation and service activities. Nearly 150 adolescent children of police personnel, attending the Art of Living course, instructor, Bhaskar Babu, and policemen participated.

Lok Ayukta tour

HDYERABAD: The lok ayukta, P. Ramanujam, will tour Krishna and West Godavari districts from January 3 to 6.

According to the schedule announced by the registrar, he will hold camp courts and receive complaints from the public at the State Guest House, Vijayawada, on January 3 and 4 and at the ZP Guest House, Eluru, on January 5 and 6.

Students take out rally

RAJAHMUNDRY: The S.G.S. Government Training College on Wednesday took out a rally in the city to create awareness on `consumer rights' among the public. The `pre-service' teachers of the colleges and students of Government Boys High School participated in the rally. The principal of the college, D. Gopala Krishna, said the rally was taken out to as part of consumer education in school curriculum.

Minister's visit

Srikakulam: The Minister for Revenue and Rehabilitation, Dharmana Prasada Rao, will arrive on a two day visit on Friday. Mr.Prasada Rao will review relief and rehabilitation measures and later inaugurate protected water schemes in Trishnatappapeta and Singupuram in the afternoon and the Palakonada road by 8 pm. He would leave for Hyderabad on Sunday afternoon.
