TUMKUR, DEC. 29. Shankar Mahadev Bidari, Inspector General of Police (Central Range), and Daya Nayak, police officer from Maharastra, were honoured at the valedictory function of the 50th Satya Ganapati Utsav at Thyagatur, near here, on Monday. Thousands of devotees from all parts of the district attended the utsav. Chandrashekara Swamiji of Bettadahalli Gavi Mutt, Siddarama Swamiji of Godekere Mutt, Guruparadeshikendra Swamiji of Keregodi Rangapura Mutt, and Immadi Mallikarjuna Swamiji of Veerashaiva Gurukulanandashram, were present. Mr. Bidari and Mr. Nayak were conferred "Karnataka Kali" title. Sangamesh Upase, actor; H.Gangadharaiah Kurihalli, journalist; Uma Shankar and Sridhara Hunasawadi, writers; and S. Vijayakumar, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, spoke. Mr. Bidari said a part of Tumkur District, which is known for coconut cultivation, had a tradition of patronising art, culture, and religion. The utsavs were an opportunity for the villagers to come together, he said. Mr. Nayak said the people of Maharastra had high respect towards Karnataka and Kannadigas. He said he had the pride of being a Kannadiga.
