Two more bodies recovered

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM, DEC. 29. The tsunami toll in the district reached 141 when rescue workers today retrieved the bodies of two children buried under debris.

While one body has been identified as that of a six-year-old girl, Annie, from Azheekkal, the other body, that of a boy aged around 10-years, is yet to be identified. Both the bodies have been kept at the Karunagapally Taluk Hospital mortuary.

Annie's body, bloated and decaying, was retrieved from under a heap of debris about 100 metres away from her house. Her parents were killed by the by the seismic waves that hit Alapad on Sunday and her house was one among the hundreds washed away by the sea. She was reported missing following the calamity.

Local residents and rescue workers fear that more bodies could be lying buried under sand and debris. By afternoon, rescue workers began sifting through the debris in a marshy area from where a stench was emanating. But no body could be found till sunset.

With the help of earth movers and other mechanical devises, rescue workers are still scanning the vast area hit by the waves. It is feared that many, if not all, of those reported missing could be dead and lying buried somewhere within the area.
