NELLORE, DEC. 29. The Minister for Primary Education, N. Rajyalakshmi, has claimed that relief measures have been expedited for rehabilitation of those affected by the tsunami and to ensure that fishermen resume their occupation. At a meeting of officials and bankers at the video conference hall at the Collectorate here on Wednesday, the Minister said it was proposed to distribute 100 sophisticated nets to affected fishermen under the `Velugu' scheme. It was estimated that Rs. 20 crores would be required to provide succour to the affected and the bankers had come forward to extend assistance at 50 per cent subsidy and 50 per cent loan. An additional Rs. 5 crores would be provided towards repairs of boats. It was also proposed to supply 25 kg of rice to each affected family for the next four months, in addition to Rs. 100. The loans of fishermen would be rescheduled. The Minister said Rs. 16 lakhs had been distributed as ex gratia to families of the deceased. The assistance of Rs. 1 lakh, declared by the Prime Minister, would be deposited in banks. The Commissioner for Rural Development and Special Officer for the district, K. Raju, said the Chief Minister had desired a conducive atmosphere for fishing to resume within a week. The officials had already expedited relief measures and a number of organisations had come forward to provide relief. It was proposed to undertake repairs to boats free of cost. The district Collector, B. Rajsekhar, said 10,000 nets were damaged in the district.
