ANANTAPUR, DEC. 29. Differences between the sarpanch and ward members led to the former allegedly slapping a ward member and the village secretary at Narpala in the district on Wednesday. Both sides lodged complaints with the police and cases were registered. The group led by the upa-sarpanch and the ward member, who was slapped by the sarpanch, went on a relay fast and staged a dharna demanding suspension of the sarpanch. G. Kamala supported by the TDP was elected sarpanch in the last elections. Of the 16 ward members, nine were won by TDP-supported candidates. Since then, Ms. Kamala's husband, G. Parandhama, was allegedly acting as shadow sarpanch and was in control of all matters relating to the gram panchayat. This was opposed by ward members. The sarpanch allegedly got removed upa-sarpanch due to such opposition last year. Later, Congress-supported Khadervali Khan was elected upa-sarpanch and has been getting the support of a few ward members in questioning the alleged irregular functioning of the sarpanch. Differences between the sarpanch and the second ward member, G. Radhakrishna, increased over the alleged role of Ms. Kamala's husband in the gram panchayat affairs. After a meeting conducted to review the development works at the village secretariat on Wednesday, Ms. Kamala allegedly slapped Mr. Radhakrishna with her chappal when the ward member was about to leave the premises. When the village secretary, Jilani Basha, tried to prevent Ms. Kamala he too had to bear a slap, it was alleged. While the sarpanch lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Radhakrishna had tried to pull her by holding her hand, the ward member complained that Ms. Kamala had attacked him for pointing out her husband's interference in the gram panchayat affairs.
