Tsunami effect in India `unexpected'

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, DEC. 29. The principal scientific advisor to the Government of India, R.Chidambaram, has said that the tsunami effect in India was `totally unexpected', though its aggression was nonetheless predictable.

Addressing students at a function here on Wednesday, he explained that the tsunami was known to occur after a shallow earthquake in the ocean, but none expected it to extend up to the Indian coast the way it did. That the killer wave would hit our coast located at a distance of 3,000 km from the Sumatra island was not at all anticipated, he said.
