Bridging of urban-rural divide imperative: R. Chidambaram

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI, DEC. 29. The Principal Scientific Advisor to the Union Government, R. Chidambaram, has said that improvement of living standards on the countryside on a par with the towns will only make India a developed nation.

Indicating that the scientists' efforts need to be furthered to take the fruits of science from the lab to the common man, he urged the Government and voluntary organisations to take up the job to remove the urban-rural divide.

Addressing CBSE students at the valedictory of the science congress conducted by Sri Vidyaniketan International School here on Wednesday,

Pilot project

Dr. Chidambaram made a mention of the Rural Technology Action Group, a pilot project currently in vogue in Uttaranchal and Tamil Nadu, which was formed to give a thrust to technological innovations.

Explaining how the hydroturbine used to grind flour was adapted into a micro hydel power plant by an innovative youth in Uttaranchal, he advised students to start seeing things in a new perspective. Dr. Chidambaram termed knowledge, not wealth, the new yardstick for a country's development status, declaring that "Development is possible only through science and technology''.

`Nuclear leader'

Dr. Chidambaram said that the country would be the undisputed leader in the nuclear arena soon. Referring to America's decision to go for a nuclear reactor in 2010 after a gap of 15 years, he said the void would make it look to India for help, "given our capability to build nine reactors, having a lower gestation period and better capacity utilisation''.

D. Narayana Rao, director, National MST Radar Facility, said the Indian youth was all set to conquer the world in the field of S&T. Being the first country to launch a satellite for education, he saw excellent opportunities in the field.

The school's chairman, M. Mohan Babu, felicitated the chief guest and his wife, Chella Chidambaram. The Chittoor DEO, M. Ramalingam, was also present.

Prizes were distributed to winners of various events.
