POINT CALIMERE (NAGAPATTINAM DISTRICT), DEC.29 . Though the fishing colony at Point Calimere has suffered major damage as elsewhere, a chance telephone call made by a fish trader to Vedaranyam had led to the escape of many people who had gathered at the fish market on the seashore during Sunday's tsunami. Sivaprakasam, the trader, had called up the ice vendor to find out the reason for the delay in the arrival of ice consignments for packing fish, when he got the news of the killer wave striking Arkattuthurai, a hamlet some 15 km away. The wave had struck Point Calimere a few minutes later before which he alerted many. Sivaprakasam was just a few yards away from the seawater and managed to escape unhurt. A large number of people took to their heels on sighting the wave unlike several other places where people were taken by total surprise. Hundreds of people were saved due to the message, says Sivaprakasam. The incident indicates that a hint of forewarning of the approaching danger could have saved many lives in the coastal areas, he adds. About 600 huts of migrating fishermen from Tuticorin, Pondicherry, Rameswaram and other coastal places, who used to stay here during the fishing season, were washed away. Twenty-six bodies have been recovered so far from the seashore in the village. No local has been found dead so far though many fishermen from outside were believed to have been washed away. There were about 130 boats operating from the village and hundreds of others used by migratory fishermen. Except some, there was no trace of many boats.
