RTC union threatens strike from January 12

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, DEC. 29. Accusing the management of being "indifferent" to the demands of the workers, the members of the Vijayawada zone of the APSRTC Employees Union has served a strike notice on it.

The members of the union led by its secretary general, V. Raja Ramamohana Rao, informed the RTC regional manager that the employees of the zone might go on an indefinite strike any day after January 12.

Demands

They later staged a demonstration in front of the Pandit Nehru Bus Station in support of their demands that included regularisation of services of members appointed on compassionate grounds, rectifying the anomalies in payment of overtime allowance and "indiscriminate" transfer of employees from the zone on the pretext of surplus staff.

Transfer travails

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Raja Ramamohana Rao, said that despite the agreement reached with the workers' unions in 2001, the services of more than 1,000 workers who were appointed on compassionate grounds were not regularised.

The management was also transferring drivers.

"While the existing drivers are being branded as surplus and transferred, drivers from places as far as Adilabad are being brought in," he said.

Overtime allowance

Explaining the overtime allowances, he said while a driver working overtime was being paid Rs. 300 and the conductor Rs. 280, the workers here were being paid Rs. 150 and Rs. 140 respectively for the same work.

There were also disparities in the payment of overtime allowances within the zone.

Though the issues had been brought to the notice of the authorities, no action was initiated. "We have, therefore, decided to go on strike if the conciliation talks fail," he said.
