Rumours of second attack keep them fleeing

By Our Staff Reporter

NAGAPATTINAM, DEC. 29. People from several villages in Nagapattinam district coast are fleeing to safer places such as Tiruvarur following rumours that the tsunami will strike once again the coastal area.

Even three days after Sunday's tragedy, villagers in the coastal areas of Kilvelur taluk were coming in bullock-carts with their belongings including cattle to relief centres in Tiruvarur.

Residents in the coastal areas of Nagapattinam town near the beach including government employees living in the Tamil Nadu Housing Board rental flats at Maraimalainar and staff in the police quarters were evacuated as seawater had submerged the houses and flats more than five feet.

The District Industries Centre, a portion of the Government Headquarters Hospital and the Port Trust and Customs offices were inundated. Workers started clearing the slush on the office premises. Records were washed away in some offices.
