CHENNAI, DEC. 29. The Indian Navy and the Coast Guard have stepped up their relief operations as more ships were placed at their command here today. Along the Coromandel coast and the Andamans, the Navy has deployed 24 ships for relief and rescue operations. Each of the ships is loaded with drinking water, essential provisions and ready-to-eat food items, blankets, dhurries, tents and medicines. Also on board are medical teams to provide relief to coastal areas in Nagapattinam and Kanyakumari. The Naval air force has also pitched tents at Cuddalore and Nagapattinam and distributed food and clothing in Colachel and Kottilpadu. Based on inputs of the civil administration, the Navy was now concentrating on providing medical facilities in hard-to-reach areas. It was operating floating medical camps at Pallepalayam, Krishnapuram, Nagapattinam and Nagore. In addition, one Indian naval ship carrying doctors has sailed out of Chennai. It will set up camps at Poompuhar, Chandrapadi and Tarangambadi. A Coast Guard ship, Samer, set sail for Colombo from Mumbai with relief supplies. The eastern region Coast Guard has sent relief teams, carrying food and medicines, to Pondicherry, Karaikkal, Mayiladuthurai and Pulikat. A press release said the Indian Air Force evacuated 1200 persons from Car Nicobar and Port Blair.
