CHENNAI, DEC. 29. The Chennai Port Trust today announced that it would allow export containers to enter the port through gate no. 10, which is located near the War Memorial on Kamarajar Salai. The decision has been taken, as many of the families affected by Sunday's tsunami have occupied the road leading to gate no. 1, the entry point for the container-laden trailer trucks. "Till an alternative place is found to rehabilitate the families, the Chennai port has decided to allow entry of the containers through gate no.10 as a temporary measure," said K. Suresh, Chairman, Chennai Port Trust. The containers would be allowed through the gate from 10 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sources in shipping circles said the port's decision was bound to bring some relief to the trade patronising the container terminal. According to an estimate, there were about 3,100 export and 3,700 import containers inside the terminal today. Meanwhile, the National Institute of Ocean Technology commenced an echo-sounding survey to assess the impact of the tsunami, especially the level of sedimentation, on the draught.Mr. Suresh said the initial findings of the survey reveal that the currents have played havoc, requiring extensive dredging in several parts. While the survey was expected to be completed on Thursday, the port would launch dredging operations immediately deploying Cauvery, its maintenance dredger vessel. Giving details of the meeting called by the Shipping Secretary, D.T. Joseph, who visited the port today on his way back to Delhi from Port Blair, he said the Secretary emphasised the need to improve the communications system to forewarn the people about tsunami attacks. The Secretary said the focus should be on having systems in place that minimises the damage due to tsunamis. He said the Centre would extend assistance to the Chennai port if need be.
