CHENNAI, DEC. 29. Places of worship should become centres of primary education also, the Madras University Vice-Chancellor, S.P. Thyagarajan, has said. Inaugurating a three-day meet of middle school students at Palanjur, about 40 km from here on Tuesday, Dr. Thyagarajan said the task of achieving 100 per cent literacy required enormous resources. For this, several sections of society should join hands and help in accomplishing the goal. All private television channels should earmark a specified time for telecasting educational programmes. Free transport has to be provided for rural students, particularly those belonging to the below the poverty line category. Rameshram Mishra, Industries Secretary, urged students to develop a scientific approach for sustainable development. R. Kishore Kumar, convener of the meet and senior principal of St. John's International Residential School, which hosted the meet, said that 47 schools from 21 States had sent their students to the seminar that highlighted the need for students to express and demonstrate their concern for the country.
