COIMBATORE, DEC. 29 . The monthly meeting of the Coimbatore Corporation Council slated for today was put off to mourn the victims of the tsunami. But, before winding up the meeting after paying homage to the victims, the Council decided to provide relief to them. A sum of Rs. 10 lakhs, by way of a day's salary of the employees, will be contributed for relief. It was also announced that each of the 72 councillors would donate the Rs. 500 sitting fee for a meeting. Announcing these contributions and the deferring of the meeting, the Mayor, T. Malaravan, said that he would make a personal contribution of Rs. 25,000. Besides, official sources said that Rs. 5 lakhs might be collected from teachers and staff of the Corporation schools. The target was Rs. 15.61 lakhs. There was some confusion over the conduct of the council meeting this morning. While the Opposition clearly wanted it to be deferred, there was no sign of any agreement from the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). However, the Opposition had its way. The leaders of various parties in the Council spoke in favour of deferment. Mr. Malaravan then announced that the meeting would be held at a later date.
