Residents clean the mess without official help
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI,
DEC. 29.
Head constable V. K. Krishnan of the Mylapore police station (traffic) is waiting for his uniform to dry. It is the only pair he has after the tsunami took away his belongings from the government housing quarters on Foreshore Estate.
Around 40 ground floor apartments in the `R' block look the same utensils stuck in mud, damaged television sets, upturned furniture and damp walls. "There was fish yesterday," says K. Malarvizhi. And sand. The residents have tried to clean the mess without waiting for help.
Officials and VIPs pass by their apartments to the adjacent Srinivasapuram kuppam without stopping.
"Though our belongings have been damaged, thankfully, there was no loss of life. But we were injured," says Mallika from RX3, pointing to red bruises on her knee.
