KANCHEEPURAM, DEC. 29. The Kancheepuram Collector, R.Venkatesan, today thanked the non-government organisations, labour unions, medical colleges and hospitals, private companies, youth clubs and banks for providing food and medicines to tsunami victims. He requested persons/organisations, wishing to extend help to the affected people in kind or cash to contact either the District Revenue Officer, J. Jayakanthan (cellular phone number: 94433-32122) or the Personal Assistant (General) to Collector, G. Gopalakrishnan (mobile number: 98426-30064). A control room (phone number: 04112-237789) has been opened in the Collectorate at Kancheepuram to receive and pass on information relating to relief work. Initial survey of damage revealed that around 35,000 people had been rendered homeless and around 2,000 catamarans, 1,800 engine-fitted fishing boats and 13,000 fishing nets were damaged. Cash assistance of Rs.15,000 was distributed to 12 families in Tiruvallur district by the Rural Industries Minister, B. Valarmathi.
