Rajendranagar: a picture of utter neglect

By J.S. Ifthekhar

HYDERABAD, DEC. 29. It mirrors the plight of slum dwellers in Rajendranagar municipality. Shorn of basic amenities, Hasan Nagar presents a picture of utter neglect. Roads are conspicuous by absence and so is underground drainage. Garbage heaps and overflowing nalas complete the picture.

The story is much the same in adjacent Mehmood Nagar, Indra Nagar and Madina Masjid bastis. Slush and grime dot the lanes. Litter and plastic bags eddy around as wind blows - giving the whole place a seedy look. Strangely, there are no garbage bins here with the result trash can be seen scattered all over. "The municipality does not clear garbage regularly," complains a local.

Drinking water supply used to be an acute problem here till recently. But now it has been eased following construction of an overhead tank.

Health hazards

However, at many places water pipelines and the open nalas can be seen criss-crossing posing serious health hazards. A poor settlement, residents here are mostly daily wage earners and not much concerned about their immediate surroundings.

"The municipality has slum area development fund but it is not taking up works here," says Mukhtar Ahmed, Majlis councillor of Ward 12.

A notified slum, Hasan Nagar and its adjacent bastis are thickly populated. But the basic amenities here leave a lot to be desired. Several bastis have no roads at all and the main approach road is badly damaged.

In Mehmood Nagar 8 of the 16 lanes have no road. "All we want is a proper drainage system and roads. Is it too much for the Government to provide," asks Karim, a tailor.

Another serious problem facing the residents here is the threat from transformers. Most of them are without any fencing or boundary wall by way of protection. Unsuspecting children play close to them, unaware of the lurking danger. "But neither the Transco nor the local councillors are bothered about this," say residents.
