GMC alumni plans global alliance

By Dennis Marcus Mathew

HYDERABAD, DEC. 29. The alumni of Gandhi Medical College (GMC) are planning to give back something to their alma mater.

After pooling their resources to organise the golden jubilee celebration, training sessions in latest courses like advance cardiac life support, an electronic library and a state-of-the-art Alumni Education Centre, the GMC alumni are planning to rope in college-mates from all parts of the world to form a global alliance.

The co-chairman of GMC's ad hoc committee (USA), Sudhaker Rao, who is also Head, Bone and Mineral Metabolism Wing, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, says the alliance will coordinate between alumni spread across continents to help GMC advance "scientifically and socially" apart from lending a hand in matters of medical equipment and updates on medical education among others.

7,000 ex-students

In Hyderabad for the jubilee celebrations, Dr. Rao says the 7,000-strong alumni are spread over India, USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Middle East and Caribbean islands, to mention a few. The US alone has around 1,200 GMC graduates and postgraduates while the UK has nearly 200. There are around 30 in Australia. The ad hoc committee in the US has collected $3 lakhs for setting up the Alumni Education Centre, likely to be ready by June 2005. It will have an electronic library, museum and mini auditorium with latest audio-visual equipment.

Course organised

The association, as part of the jubilee celebrations organised an advance cardiac life support (ACLS) course in association with the American Heart Association and the Indian Institute of Emergency Medical Services, which benefited over 120 alumni. An ACLS library, first in the Indian Government sector, was set up and a basic trauma course, the first of its kind in the city, was also conducted.
