MADURAI, DEC.29. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments with regard to hunting of peacocks in the Arulmigu Subramaniaswamy Temple at Thiruparankundram. Hearing a public interest litigation filed by a social worker, the first Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Markandey Katju and Justice K. Govindarajan, directed the Commissioner to reply to the petition before Monday. According to the petitioner, T. Sekaran, a good number of peacocks, including rare Australian white peacocks residing behind the hill temple, were being hunted on a regular basis for commercial benefits. Claiming that the birds were also facing trouble from dogs, monkeys and pigs, he alleged that the authorities failed to take effective measures in protecting the birds from the menace. He also stated that the national bird was protected under the Wildlife Protection Act and sought a direction to the Collector and the Executive Officer of the temple to take necessary steps to save the birds.
