MADURAI, DEC.29. A team comprising officials and staff from Madurai district has been dispatched on a special duty to Kanyakumari district today to assist the administration there in the rescue and relief operations. According to the Collector, D. Raajendiran, the team has been sent following a direction from the State Government. The team included the Special Deputy Collectors, C. Narayanan (Stamps), and Santhosham (Kallar Reclamation), Marimuthu, inspection cell officer, 10 tahsildars, 10 deputy tahsildars and 10 assistants. They have reported before the Kanyakumari Collector today and will carry out the rescue and relief operations. They will stay in the district till the Government served further orders. The team has been provided with six vehicles to facilitate mobility and accessibility to remote places. The members have been specifically instructed to scrupulously follow the government orders. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry had sent about Rs. one lakh worth of clothes to the affected families at Colachel, Kanyakumari and other parts of Kanyakumari district. The lorry containing the clothes was flagged off by the Collector in the presence of the chamber president, S. Rethinavelu, this evening. The chamber plans to send essential commodities and clothes in 10 more lorries soon. Already it has collected 2000 sarees, 200 churidars, 1000 blouses, 2000 shirts, 400 dhotis, 1200 pants, 100 bedsheets, 50 towels, dress for children, seven boxes containing chappatis, and four bags of rice. The contribution to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund to rehabilitate the tsunami ravaged victims in Tamil Nadu continued to pour in from all quarters in Madurai district and till date the administration has received Rs.3,01,844 by way of demand drafts and cheques. Mr. Raajendiran has appealed to members of the public to liberally donate for the cause of rehabilitating the families affected by the calamity.
