Corporation councillors and officials, led by the Mayor, C. Ramachandran, at a condolence meeting for tsunami victims held in the city on Wednesday.
MADURAI, DEC.29. The Madurai Corporation councillors and officials, led by the Mayor, C. Ramachandran, today observed two-minute silence as a mark of condolence for the victims of tsunami. The Mayor, who was a former MLA, has committed to donate Rs.10,000 and all councillors their one-month sitting allowance of Rs.500 each, for rehabilitation of the victims. The Commissioner (in-charge), C. Rajamani, the Deputy Mayor, D. Chinnasamy, leaders of all political parties, S. D. Jeyabalan, S. Mahalingam, I. Siluvai, P.K. Ramalingam, M. Saravanan, M.R. Manickam (independent) and officials participated in the condolence meeting.
Relief materials
The Corporation has sent 170 sanitary workers, bleaching powder packets and other materials to undertake relief work in the tsunami-hit Nagapattinam district. The team has been deployed on the instructions of the Commissioner of Revenue Administration and Commissioner of Municipal Administration.
Contribution
Various associations of corporation officers and workers expressed their willingness to contribute their one day salary to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. Their representatives handed over letters confirming their contribution to Mr. Ramachandran, and Mr. Rajamani.
`Black Day'
The urban district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has proposed to observe tomorrow as a `Black Day' and pay homage to those who have lost their lives in the tsunami ravaged coastal villages on December 26. According to the district secretary, R. Jyotiram, the party will hold a condolence meeting at 5 p.m. at Tallakulam tomorrow and hoist black flags at one thousand places in the city to condole the deaths. The party will also provide Rs. one lakh as relief to rehabilitate the victims.
