Weather

The maximum temperature recorded at the city's Gannavaram airport on Wednesday was 30 degrees Celsius and the minimum 18.6 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity, which was 96 per cent in the morning, slipped to 69 per cent towards evening.

Commodity prices

Following were the rates (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities at the city's wholesale market on Wednesday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil-50, palmolein oil-40, sunflower oil-51, tamarind (flower variety)--30 to 40, tamarind (karipuli variety)--45 to 57, chillies-12 to 27, rice (2716)--12, rice (super fine)--12.50, rice (Sona Masoori)--13 to 16, black gram-20.70 to 24.80, red gram-21.50 to 26.50.

Donation for

tsunami-hit

The Genting Lanco Kondapalli Power Project has donated a sum of Rs.2 lakhs to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for the tsunami victims in the State. The cheque was presented to the District Collector, K. Prabhakar Reddy, by the company's general manager, Frederick Paul Miller. The sum included a day's salary of the company's employees, a release said here.

The State-level bankers committee led by the general manager of the Reserve Bank of India, P. Vijaya Kumar, and the general manager of Andhra Bank, A.L.Nageswara Rao,

would visit the tsunami-affected areas of Krishna district on December 30.

The Andhra Bank, Vijayawada division, has also decided to distribute essential items to around 400 families at Kanurpallepalem village on the same day.

Jamaat-e-Islami

The Jammat-e-Islami Hind, AP and Orissa unit distributed rice and dal to over 300 affected victims of the tsunami tragedy at the Manginapudi beach in Krishna district.

In a statement, the organisation's president, Abdul Basit Anwar, conveyed his deep-felt sympathies to the affected victims and bereaved families.

The municipal commissioner, V.Usha Rani, stressed the need for people to practice yoga regularly and keep a tab on their dietary habits to prevent diseases.

Speaking at the concluding day function of the yoga training class at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium here on Wednesday, Ms.Rani said yoga and a healthy diet would help check various ailments like diabetes and hypertension.

for youth

The Navajeevan Bala Bhavan has launched a special training programme for youth at Karmikangar, Tadigapa village, to train them in weaving handloom material. Speaking on the occasion, the village president, M.Vijayalakshmi, said that such training programmes would help the youth to learn the hereditary trade even while pursuing their education. The Bala Bhavan's coordinator, T.Nagaraju, and others were present.

Maths talent

test

Superwhizz academy is organising a statewide maths talent test at the Andhra Loyala Grounds on January 2, 2005, from 8 a.m. The competition is open for MPC senior students and there would be no entry fee. The winners would be awarded prizes besides all the participants would be given certificates.

The test would be followed by a lecture of the academy's director, M.A. Gutpa on developing one's memory power by 500 per cent.
