Navy begins relief operations in Lanka

VISAKHAPATNAM, DEC. 29. Indian Navy personnel, aboard INS Sandhayak and INS Sukanya, which have already reached Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, began their relief operations on Wednesday and attended on the displaced people in refugee camps.

According to an Eastern Naval Command spokesman here, medical camps were set up on a war footing in the neighbourhood of Trincomalee and even in remote places. Over 700 Sri Lankans were treated in the first few hours of the camps. More such camps would be operational from Thursday.

Material loaded

Large quantities of relief material were loaded onto the medium-built landing ship tank, INS Ghorpad, at the Naval Base here on Wednesday for despatch to Sri Lanka. The ship carried over 25 tonnes of rice, 30 tonnes of drinking water sachets, 10 tonnes of dal, 10 tonnes of vegetables and fruits, 1.5 tonnes of milk and 5,000 blankets. In addition, three tonnes of medicines and medical stores, including bleaching powder to contain the spread of epidemics, a number of portable generators, 500 syntex-type water tanks and tents, were also being loaded onto INS Ghorpad.

Food packets distributed

Meanwhile, relief operations undertaken by the Navy in Tamil Nadu coast were in full swing. About 1,000 food packets were distributed to the fishermen in distress on Wednesday.

Naval personnel of INS Khanjar, which is currently patrolling the area, distributed provisions to the affected people at Porto Novo and Cuddalore. The area ships medical team treated nearly 300 patients at Nagapattinam.

Food and clothes were distributed in the worst hit villages in and around Colachel in Kanyakumari district. Naval personnel had also set up relief camps in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
