Fog stops flights, trains

NEW DELHI, DEC. 29. Five domestic and one international flight were diverted and several others delayed as thick fog enveloped Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Wednesday morning. The fog also affected rail service. Eight trains were cancelled and over 30 delayed due to poor visibility in the Capital and adjoining States.

The Airports Authority of India said while night and early morning flight operations were normal, all of a sudden thick fog engulfed the airport at 8-15 a.m. bringing the Runway Visibility Range (RVR) down to 75 metres. With the visibility remaining the same till 9-30 a.m., five incoming domestic flights from Mumbai, Agra and Bangalore had to be diverted to other airports like Jaipur, Mumbai and Lucknow. Similarly, a Kuwait Airways flight was diverted to Mumbai.

It was only after 10 a.m., when the visibility went up to 700 metres, that normal flight operations resumed and the first flight to operate was Air Sahara-141 to Chennai at 10-01 a.m.

Train services also remained badly affected due to foggy conditions in Delhi and its adjoining States. As many as eight trains were cancelled while over two dozen trains were running hours behind schedule.

The trains that were cancelled today were Mughalsarai-Bareilly Express, Lal Quila Express and Unchahar Express were cancelled both ways while New Delhi-Rewa Express, Delhi-Farukkabad Kalindi Express, Howrah-Delhi Janta Express, Bhiwani-Malda Farakka Express and Sriganganagar-Delhi Udyan Abha Express also stood cancelled.

Important trains that were running behind schedule included Mahananda Express, Sadbhawana Express, Shaheed Express, Shramjivi Express, Magadh Express, Janta Express, Farakka Express Jansadharan Express, Kashi Vishwanath Express, Jharkhand Express, Nauchandi Express and Kalka Mail.
