Kids escape from shelter home

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 29. As many as 28 children escaped from the Seva Kutir shelter home at Mukherji Nagar in North-West Delhi on Tuesday night. The police have so far traced 14 of them and raids are on to track down the others.

The incident reportedly occurred around 11-30 p.m. when the children broke the grill of a window in the bathroom and sneaked out of the building. The shelter home staff informed the police when the incident came to light. Subsequently, raids were mounted and six children were traced to Jehangirpuri, five were picked up from New Delhi railway station and three from Civil Lines.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West Delhi), Sanjay Singh, a search for the other children is on. "Most of them are orphans or homeless," said Mr. Singh.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, accused the Social Welfare Department of indulging in corrupt practices and alleged that children have run away from its shelter homes in the past also.

Mr. Mukhi alleged that most of the children said to have escaped were later found working at the residence of the Social Welfare officials.

He further alleged that children kept in these shelter homes were being sold to foreigners, while Indian couples were not being given an opportunity to adopt them. "

Held for impersonation

For the second time in less than three days, a passenger has been arrested at Indira Gandhi International Airport here on the charge of cheating and impersonation for travelling on a ticket issued in some other person's name.

At about 6-45 this morning, Mohinder Samanta, a goldsmith of Karol Bagh in Central Delhi, was caught by CISF personnel while he was trying to board Indian Airlines flight IC-688 from Delhi to Mumbai on a ticket issued in the name of P. Pradhan.
