Beaches to open today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 29. The restriction imposed by the authorities on access to the beaches in the State in the wake of the tsunami onslaught will be lifted on Thursday. "All beaches in the State will be open to tourists from December 30," an official release here said tonight. The Government has deployed additional lifeguards in all the beach destinations.

Council offer

The State Child Welfare Council will take full responsibility for protecting the children who were orphaned by the tsunami disaster that hit the Kerala coast on Sunday, according to a pressnote quoting the administrator, C. U. Mathai, here. The costs incurred for treating the children injured or disabled in the tragedy will also be borne by the council, the pressnote added.

Body found

The body of a two-day-old baby was reportedly washed ashore near the Vettukad beach this evening. Valiathura police said the body was later shifted to the Medical College mortuary. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained, the police said.
