SALEM, DEC. 30. The Council of the Salem Corporation passed the agenda listed in both ordinary and urgent meetings with a few changes here today to pay homage to the tsunami victims. The AIADMK floor leader, M. K. Selvaraj, read out the condolence resolution. During the zero hour, the DMK leader, S.D. Kalaiamudhan, requested the Mayor not to transact any official business of the House today as a mark of respect for the tsunami victims. He also appealed to the Salem citizens not to take part in any New Year revelry. The Mayor, R. Sureshkumar, announced that the employees and councillors of the Corporation had donated Rs. 5 lakhs to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund. Councillors Tirugnanam, Chandrasekaran and Rajagopal also offered their individual contributions. The Deputy Mayor, S. Soundappan, described it as a great calamity. The Commissioner, T. Paulsamy, said that the Corporation had reacted positively to the distress call from the Nagapattinam municipality by sending drugs and materials. The conservancy workers have donated their day's wages while the councillors have given two month sitting fees.
