SALEM, DEC. 30. The Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA) has refuted the allegations that the medical aid from Government hospitals to the tsunami victims in the districts of Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Kanyakumari were "delayed". The association president, Dr. K. Prakasam, told The Hindu here today that the association members had rushed to the ravaged spots in these districts to carry out the relief and preventive measures. Disaster management committees, with hundreds of doctors and paramedical staff from various Government hospitals, had also been set up in all these places to ensure a round-the-clock medicare to the affected people. There was no dearth of medicines or necessary drugs, he said.
Post mortem of bodies
He, however, accepted that there was a delay in the decision of administrators in these districts immediately after the disaster whether or not to perform post mortem on the bodies before the burial. This had caused some discontent among the local public as the delay in taking the decision to dispose of the bodies irritated them. When it was brought to the notice of the administrators that post mortem need not be insisted in such enormous natural calamities, the permission for immediate disposal of bodies was granted, he added.
Rs. 46 lakhs donated
The association had donated Rs. 46 lakhs to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund, he added.
