DHARWAD, DEC. 30. A woman has an independent personality and an inherent right to have a child only when she desires it, her health permitting, K.S. Deshpande, founder-president of the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Dharwad, and retired professor of Library Science of the Karnatak University, said here on Wednesday. He was speaking at a seminar on "Safe pregnancy" under the auspices of the FPAI, Dharwad. He said the women have the right to go in for safe termination of pregnancy and this has been ensured through a law, Mr. Deshpande said. There was need to create awareness about the safe pregnancy measures available, he said. Basavaraj Sadar, Assistant Director of All India Radio, Dharwad, said legal safeguards for safe pregnancy had become essential. He called upon members of the medical profession to ensure that the gadgets such as the ultra sound sonography equipment are not misused. S.B. Gokhale, FPAI Dharwad unit president, presided over the programme. He said a childless year should be observed once in five years.
